Earlier this week, four special needs kids in central Pennsylvania were given new modified adaptive bikes made especially for them. Educational service agency BLaST IU partnered with Variety children’s charity to make the bike giveaway possible and to improve the lives of the kids and their families.
Haven Huffnagle, 7, who has Down syndrome, was one of the recipients of the new adaptive bikes. Her mom Heather Hendershot says Haven’s disability keeps her from being able to ride a normal bike and the new bike will allow her to do stuff other kids get to do. "We can go down to the park now,” Hendershot explains. “And I can go on walks with her, and she can have her own bike and get some exercise."
Variety and BLaST have been collaborating for years. Together they’ve provided over 100 pieces of adaptive equipment to kids with special needs in central Pennsylvania. And before this week’s giveaway, they had provided over 35 adaptive bikes to children with disabilities.
