Lynn Cressey opened A Little Off the Top barbershop in Brunswick, Maine, back in 2007, but she’s not in it for the money. She knows her customers because she takes the time to talk to them and find out how their lives are, so she knows many are struggling to make ends meet. And she often tells those in need that there’s no charge for her services.
Back in September, Lynn added a sign out front with the prices that notes, “If this creates a hardship for you, please let me know. Nobody will be turned away for a lack of ability to pay.” She not only offers free cuts to anyone who’s going through a rough patch, the mom of nine and grandma of 38 goes above and beyond for her customers.
One man who came in recently to get a cut before an upcoming job interview admitted he raided his child’s piggy bank to scrape together $6 in change, telling Lynn he’d get the rest to her. But she refused his money, did the cut for free, and gave him $10 for gas money to get to the interview. Lynn says her community has been there for her when she went through tough times, during COVID shutdown and when her husband was dying, so she’s returning the favor, one haircut at a time.
