A mother and son in Florida are helping to tackle food waste and feed those in need for free with their food truck. Seven years ago, Cameron Macleish was traveling the world when he learned about the vast amount of good food that gets thrown away every day. Then in 2019, he partnered with his mom, Ellen Macleish, a professional chef and fellow food waste activist, on a project in their home town of Clearwater.
They call their project 360 Eats and with the help of a $40-thousand grant from the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay, they purchased a food truck and created a gourmet mobile soup kitchen. They call the food truck Sustain-A-Bowl and they take food that would have ended up in the landfill that’s donated from local businesses and use it to provide free gourmet meals to people in need.
Cameron says a lot of people who first see the truck can’t believe that the food is actually free. "They think there has to be some catch,” he says. “It’s free, it’s gourmet and it’s made with love." He also believes that by using a food truck instead of serving food through a shelter or food pantry it gives the customer a sense of dignity. “Food trucks are fun, they’re exciting,” he explains. “That’s exactly what we want people to feel when they receive these meals.”
