Florida Teens Save Three From Boat Crash In River

A group of high school friends were enjoying an evening of snook fishing on the St. Lucie River in Florida when they witnessed a boat crash and turned their trip into a rescue mission. Nash Kennedy, 16, Jack Aubuchon and Riley Kirby, both 17, say they saw a boat moving pretty fast past them and watched as it slammed right into a channel marker.

The teens went over to the boat to make sure everyone was okay, and found three people on board who told them they were fine, but three others had been ejected into the water. Nash, Jack and Riley worked to pull the other three boaters out of the river and saw that one, a 14-year-old boy, was badly injured with a large cut on his back. Nash says the cut, which went from the boy’s shoulders to the hips, appeared to have been caused by a propeller.

They wrapped him up in a jacket, called 911 and returned the uninjured people to their boat, then delivered the 14-year-old to a waiting ambulance. He was flown by helicopter to a trauma center, according to a Martin County Fire Rescue official. The trio of teen rescuers are being called heroes for their efforts, but they’re not sure they’re worthy of the title. “I don’t think we’re heroes. I think we just did the right thing,” Jack says. “We just did what we were all taught to do.”
