A 107-year-old WWII veteran is honored with a Silver Star 77 years after the war’s end. Sergeant 1st Class Harold Nelson was drafted in 1941 at 26-years-old. He served in the Army for four years, and fought on the front lines in Europe. Nelson spent 635 days in combat, made six amphibious landings, was shot three times, and earned two Purple Hearts for his service.

This past week, Nelson was finally recognized for his service and sacrifice at a ceremony at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs. “For gallantry in action,” the centenarian was presented with one of the U.S.’s highest honors for valor in combat, the Silver Star.

Nelson’s service records were destroyed in a fire 50 years ago, which is why it took so long for him to receive the award. His daughter, Carolee Soden, who was in attendance was glad he was still around to receive it. "It happened, and it’s amazing that it happened while he’s still here with us," she said. Nelson knows how lucky he was just to make it home from the war and said, “I guess the good Lord was looking after me."
