An Ohio family is delivering free food to kids in need out of their refurbished ice cream truck. In 2016, youth ministers Jason and Anne Watson from Frazeysburg, Ohio, started a program for kids at their church that included free lunches. They had to shut down the in-person event during the pandemic, but Jason had another idea.

He approached a local ice cream truck owner and asked if he’d be willing to drive them around so they could hand out free treats. The man was so impressed with the Watsons that he did them one better; he offered them one of his trucks. So in October of 2020, they bought a used ice cream truck and started driving it around their town serving free food to those in need.

The Watsons estimate that they’ve served about 15-hundred meals from the truck in the last couple of years. This summer, the truck needed repairs and a GoFundMe raised over $10-thousand to pay for a new transmission and engine. The family has been blown away by the outpouring of support from all over and they have a dream to one day open a free cafe where people can come and have a hot dinner. Until then, they’ll be out in their ice cream truck, giving out free lunches and treats and spreading joy.
