Michigan police officers help a disabled man get home when his electric wheelchair dies. Rodney Sellers was still a half a mile from his assisted living facility when his electric wheelchair’s battery went dead at around 9:45 at night. He’d just gotten off a bus and was stranded on the side of the road. Not sure how he’d possibly get home, he called 911 for help.
Sterling Heights police and fire showed up to assist Rodney and they decided the best thing to do was to push him the last half mile home. The moment was captured on police body cam. "It kind of sounds crazy but, I can push him pretty good if you guys stay behind me," one of the officers says in the recording. "I don't mind with the workout, I'm going to push it."
And so the officers took turns pushing Rodney home — all the way to his room — and he thought what they did was amazing. “I felt like a celebrity," he says. "All this attention is real nice." But SHPD Lieutenant Mario Bastianelli says it’s all just in a day's work. "We strive in Sterling Heights to go above and beyond, to provide better service to our residents any which way we can."
