A 70-year-old Philadelphia grandma comes out of retirement to lifeguard amid nationwide lifeguard shortage. Robin Borlandoe worked as a lifeguard for the city of Philadelphia when she was teen and loved the job. So when she became aware of a shortage of lifeguards in the city keeping 50 of the city’s 65 pools closed, she decided to do something to help.

Robin was motivated in part because the pools give kids a safe place to go during the summer months. "They have no place to go," she explains. "Pools are closed all around." More than 100 kids under 18 have been shot in the city this year alone, so helping to keep the pools open can actually save lives. "I decided to finally do it to do something for our kids, our community," she says.

It took her a few tries to get recertified as a lifeguard, but after she did, she was able to land a job with the city. She feels it’s her duty to help the community any way she can and is excited for the opportunity to do just that. "I'm very much committed to this," she says. "This is my reputation. This is my community."
