A dog in North Carolina rescues baby ducks from a drainage pipe. Earlier this week, Jorge Serrano and his nine-year-old flat coat retriever, Charlie, were at Robbins Park in Cornelius, North Carolina. Parkgoers noticed that several ducklings had fallen into a drainage hole in the middle of a pond. “We were just going to go fishing and we saw the mom duck swimming around the storm drain,” says witness Kayla Hunerwadel.
Witnesses considered calling the fire department to save the ducklings, but Serrano stepped in, thinking Charlie might be up for the job. “He’ll do anything you ask him to do. He’ll deliver newspapers when he walks by somebody’s house. Or he’ll carry flowers to somebody if you ask him to do it,” says Serrano. “I just thought, Charlie’s a pretty good guy. Maybe he could go through the pipe and get them.”
So Serrano sent Charlie down the storm drain with instructions to bring the ducklings out and Charlie did as he was asked, bringing the baby ducks out one by one. Bystanders were understandably impressed with Charlie, calling the pup a “hero.” “It makes me really proud,” says Serrano. “I’d like to take credit for training him but really, he’s just a smart guy that wants to please. And he’d do it for anybody.”
