After returning from a camping trip in Hawaii a few years ago, Roxann Whitwell was met by an unexpected surprise: a notification from Facebook, an email, and results from a DNA website revealing she had a younger half-sister. Allison Raley of Arkansas had been using the DNA site to trace her biological roots, but she was as surprised as Whitwell to learn she had a sister.
Even though they live over 3-thousand miles apart, the long-lost siblings started working on making up for lost time by “getting to know each other virtually.” And then recently, when Whitwell took a trip to Oklahoma City, the two sisters got to meet face-to-face for the first time ever. The much-anticipated first meeting started with breakfast where they exchanged gifts at a cafe in Tulsa.
When asked about things they’ve learned they have in common, Raley says, "I mean I know the little things, but that's the great thing… we have the rest of our lives now." They may not be able to rewind the past 30 years, but they’ve made a promise to spend their future catching up.
