When Cecilia Liu hired Marc Wong to pet-sit her dog Cody while she and her family were out of town, she couldn’t have known how much the arrangement was going to improve Cody’s quality of life. The three-year-old Maltipoo struggles with a degenerative disease that causes seizures and has slowly taken away his ability to walk or even stand.

After having to hold Cody while the pup used the bathroom began to cause Wong to have some back pain, he knew something needed to change. "During potty times, he needs to be propped up on all fours,” Wong explains, “This process could take five to ten minutes, during which I had to physically hold him in that position." So after a few days of this, Wong used some leftover PVC pipe to create a cradle that would support Cody while he did his business.

Once Wong was able to see what a positive effect the cradle had on Cody’s behavior, he had the idea to add wheels to the design, transforming it into a sort of wheelchair. Now Cody is able to get around at a “brisk pace,” and his quality of life has vastly improved. Liu has noticed a big change in Cody too. "We can see that his muscles are getting stronger,” Liu says, “He seems to remember that he has the ability to walk.” She’s grateful for Wong and his “genius” invention, adding, "He is a lifesaver.”
