Good Samaritans help reunite an autistic boy with his companion dog after it went missing during a cross-country trip. Last week, Miranda Huckeby, her eight-year-old son Merrick, and his support dog, Sky, were driving across the country, moving from California to Indiana, when they made a quick stop in New Mexico. During the stop, the Siberian husky, who Merrick has depended on for four years to help him with his severe autism, took off from the vehicle.
They searched for Sky, calling her name and driving around the desert looking for her, but didn’t have any luck and were forced to continue on their trip. “I have a little boy in the backseat and his dog is gone,” Miranda says. “That was hard.” A relative posted online, asking for help to locate the pup and the next day, learned that she had been found and handed over to an animal shelter west of Albuquerque.
Liz Yorek with Y2K Pet Transport in Austin, heard about Sky and volunteered to travel to New Mexico, pick her up and return her to her family in Indiana. A groomer in New Mexico cleaned Sky up for the trip and when Yorek and Sky arrived in Anderson, Indiana, local police escorted them to the Huckeby’s home. The family was overjoyed to be reunited with their dog. “Having Sky back home means the world to me,” says Miranda. “It’s like a miracle, everyone pulling together. She’ll be in his room tonight, sleeping under his bed like she always does.”
