A Rhode Island couple on their honeymoon in Spain help save more than a dozen babies from a fire. Because of Covid travel restrictions, Doran Smith and David Squillante had to wait over two years to go on their honeymoon, but finally made it on their dream-trip to Spain.

While on their way to tour a park in Barcelona, the couple spotted a group of women who seemed in a panic. "I saw a flame coming out of the doorway, next to the door that these women had come out of," Doran says. "So, I said 'Oh my God there's a fire.'" With little concern for his own safety, David ran toward the fire. He entered the building not knowing what to expect and then he realized he was in a nursery.

Even though none of the nurses spoke English, David said they all just started working together to get the babies to safety. "Instinct took over,” he says. “I found myself looking at 15, 20 babies sleeping, and immediately just kind of lined everyone up and we started grabbing them, putting them into the crib." As smoke filled the room, they quickly got the babies outside and across the street from the burning building. Fire crews arrived a few minutes later, and the couple continued on their walk as if nothing had happened. And now they have a honeymoon story they’ll never forget.
