A good Samaritan rescues nine people from floodwaters in his Eastern Kentucky community. Nathan Day, a former coal miner from Hindman, Kentucky, got a call early one morning last week from a neighbor asking him to save her grandchildren. Up until that moment, Nathan didn’t realize that his community was experiencing unprecedented flooding and many of his neighbors were desperate to be rescued.

Nathan and his wife, Krystal, made their way to the neighbor’s house where they found five children and two mothers stuck on the roof and they helped them get to dry land. “I put a child under each arm and one around my neck and took them back to my house,” Nathan recalls. “The oldest child was holding a small dog."

After rescuing the children, Nathan went to find his former high school English teacher and his second grade teacher, who both live alone in the community. "I saw the water rising and I knew my two former teachers were probably trapped in their houses," he says. "It was heartbreaking." With the help of some of his neighbors, Nathan was able to rescue both women from their homes and help them reunite with their families. When asked why he was willing to risk his safety to make sure his former teachers were saved, Nathan said his teacher’s caring nature had stuck with him his whole life.
