A pair of municipal courts in suburban Kansas City are accepting school supplies in lieu of fines. The City of Shawnee announced that for a limited time they’re allowing people to pay a portion of their court fines or fees with school supplies.
Through August 5th, anyone can show up in person to the Shawnee Municipal Court with new school supplies in their original package with a receipt and they’ll get a credit for court fines and fees. $15 worth of supplies will get you a $50 credit or bring in $30 worth and get $100 toward fines.
City of Shawnee communication manager Julie Breithaupt says the program is good for all involved. “We really see it as a win-win situation,” she explains. “We’re collecting all of these new school supplies and we’ll then turn them over to the Shawnee Lions Club and they will get those out and distribute them to children who might need all of those school supply lists filled before they go back to school.”
- The nearby city of Olathe is offering a similar program, only theirs is just for parking fines.
