“Miracle” Rescue Of Father & Son After Car Plunges 500 Feet

A California father and son are lucky to be alive after their vehicle crashed 500 feet off a cliff. Earlier this week, Scott Anderson and his 11-year-old son were driving in Mariposa County, California. The weather was terrible; it was windy and raining and Anderson lost control of their Toyota 4 Runner while making a turn. The vehicle went off the road, flipped over several times, and tumbled into a ditch 500 feet below the road.

Fortunately for the Andersons, about 45 minutes later a CALFire employee happened to be driving by and noticed a broken mile marker sign, pulled over to investigate, and spotted the Anderson’s vehicle at the bottom of the embankment. A team of rescuers from the Mariposa County Sheriff’s office, CALFire, and Mercy Ambulance performed a dangerous technical rescue that took more than five hours.

Anderson and his son reportedly only sustained moderate injuries and were taken to area hospitals. California Highway Patrol Sergeant Brian Pennings says it’s a miracle that the Andersons survived the crash. But the fact that they did is in large part due to their decision to wear their seatbelts. He says nearly half of traffic fatalities in the state involve people not wearing their seatbelts. “This is a situation where they were [wearing their seatbelts] and we probably would be having a different discussion if they were not.”
