Colorblind Teen’s Friends Surprise Him With Special Glasses

A teen in Lincoln, Nebraska, is seeing colors for the first time thanks to a birthday gift from his friends. Zane Stubbendeck and his friends got in an argument about the color of a stain on his socks and that was the first time that they realized their friend is colorblind. They talked about buying him the special glasses that allow some colorblind people to see colors, and on his recent birthday, that finally happened.

For Zane’s 19th birthday a few weeks ago, seven of his friends pooled their money to buy him a $250 pair of EnChroma glasses, which allow some colorblind people to see colors. When Zane puts the glasses on for the first time, his hand starts shaking and he starts to cry. One of Zane’s friends, EJ Soucek, says they’d wanted to get him the glasses for a long time. “So now that I was finally doing it for him I was very excited,” Soucek says. “but then he started crying and I had to hold my tears back.”

Zane is happy to be able to see colors now that he’s never been able to see before, but even happier to be surrounded by friends that care so much for him. “The only reason I was able to experience that is because of them,” he says. “I couldn’t be any more grateful to have those type of people around me.” Zane’s new glasses are made for outdoor use, but EnChroma is sending him another pair for indoor use for free. They’ve also offered to make Zane a brand ambassador for the company.
