A martial arts instructor is back to teaching after having half of her skull removed. Natasha Gunther Santana, a 26-year-old from San Jose, California, suffered a string of sinus infections in 2021 that were treated with antibiotics. However, the medicine seemed to have stopped working by the fifth round as Santana began dealing with migraines, vomiting, and severe mood swings.
Following a brain scan, docs informed her, due to a gene mutation, antibiotics would no longer work, and that the sinus infection had spread to her brain. This resulted in a large piece of her skull needing to be removed to drain the abscess, leaving a sizable divot on the left side of her head. After undergoing therapy to relearn how to walk and talk, the wife, mother, and teacher is now back to living a healthy life, saying, “I’ve come to terms that this is my new normal and I’m just happy to be alive.”
