A Marine veteran in Bonita, California, is getting a brand new mortgage-free home, built from scratch by the Gary Sinise Foundation. In 2011, Jose Armenta was on a security patrol while stationed in Afghanistan with the Marines when he stepped on an IED, losing both his legs to above the knee. “I didn’t plan on getting injured in the military, right, but life doesn’t care about your plans,” he says, “So you make the best of what life throws at you.”
To honor the sacrifice that Armenta has made to his country and to help make life a little easier for him, his wife, and their three children, the Gary Sinise Foundation is currently building a custom, adapted home for the family. The home will feature extra wide hallways, large open spaces, and a specially designed bathroom and kitchen to make it easier for Armenta to get around with his prosthetics.
This past week, the family got a sneak peek at their new 29-hundred-square-foot home while it’s still under construction. The moment was what the Sinise Foundation calls a “Walls of Honor” event where friends and family can write words of encouragement on the home’s framing before the drywall is installed.
- When the Armenta’s new home is completed in November, it will be the 89th home built for disabled veterans by the Foundation in its 12-year history.
