Slow and steady terror…A community in South Florida is locking down as an infestation of giant African land snails roam the neighborhood. The problem with these invasive pests is that they can puncture car tires and destroy structures and oh yeah…cause meningitis. This particular kind of snail can grow up to eight inches long and can devour all types of plants, as well as stucco, plastic, and metal.

So how did these animals end up here from Eastern Africa? Authorities have tied the species' spread throughout the world to the pet trade. Therefore, they’re led to believe that someone brought it to Broward County, Florida as a pet. Since last year, there have been over a thousand sightings of these cantankerous critters.
