This weekend marked a milestone for Bend, Oregon, resident Shar Tobin. The 85-year-old completed her 100th half-marathon. The avid runner, who picked up the sport over five decades ago confesses she "didn't have a goal," and was surprised to find she had run that many races.
Shar’s daughter, Mari Tobin Siceloff, also an avid runner, is inspired by her mom. "She's an inspiration to so many people,” she says, “You know you can do anything that you set your mind to." A testament to that strength, last September Shar suffered her first running-related injury when a dog ran into her from behind, rupturing a tendon in her leg. Although she had to have surgery followed by months of physical therapy, she was back at it in time for the 'Happy Girls’ race in Bend this past weekend.
Her physical therapist, Steve Tasson, and his team were so inspired by Shar that they decided to run alongside the octogenarian. In a touching family moment, Shar's daughters, Mari and Kerri, and her granddaughter Keala also joined her for the race, marking Keala's first half-marathon. The family tradition is set to continue, as Keala says she plans to run alongside her mom when she’s 85. Touched, Shar admits, "That makes me so very happy."
