A Wisconsin second-grader, Nante Niemi, who disappeared on Saturday during a family camping trip in a remote Michigan park, was found safe on Monday. The eight-year-old had sheltered under a log and was in good health, having "braved the elements."
Nante was discovered two miles from his family's campsite at Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. He went missing while gathering firewood around 1pm, prompting a search by over 150 search and rescue personnel from multiple state and local agencies. The search focused on a 40-square-mile area within the 60-thousand acre park on the shore of Lake Superior.
Rescue personnel searched by land, air, and water in the remote, hilly park, which had standing water and deep snow in some areas that made seasonal roads impassable. Before he was found, Nante's Wisconsin school district announced that they were standing by with two buses of volunteers ready to help in the search. The district later posted updates saying that Nante had been located and included images of him posing with the search team after they found him on Monday afternoon.
