Murphy The Bald Eagle Goes From Caring For A Rock To A Real Hatchling

Murphy the Bald Eagle is on dad duty. He is an adult and was seriously injured and can’t fly anymore, so he lives in the World Bird Sanctuary. lately, He started an unusual habit and it led to something bigger.

In case you didn’t know, male bald eagles split hatchling and egg care 50/50 with their mates. Well, Murphy was apparently feeling paternal, so he made a nest in the ground. He would fuss with it and add twigs and leaves. In it was a rock. Not wanting to make him upset, caretakers let Murphy do his thing.

Last week in some storms, a nest with two hatchlings was blown off its perch and only one survived. The little fella was taken to WBS and given to Murphy to care for. It could have gone one of two ways: Murphy could’ve rejected him and killed him or accepted him. Much to the relief of everyone, the two bonded.

Murphy preened the hatchling and the pair are now inseparable. As for the rock… it’s just a rock now.
