When Peter Bradley, of Dorset, England, and his partner rescued a dog from a local animal shelter, they didn’t know that she’d end up repaying the favor. Shortly after adopting Ruby, a five-year-old German shepherd, Bradley was out for a walk with her when his blood pressure dropped, he passed out and tumbled down into an eight-foot-deep ditch.
When he came to, he didn’t know where he was or what had happened. “I could feel my boots filling up with water,” Bradley recalls, “But could not find the strength to move.” When he finally realized where he was, he tried to get out, but couldn’t climb up the slick sides of the ditch. Thankfully, Ruby never left him and stood at the edge of the ditch barking until someone came to Bradley’s aid.
As soon as Bradley got home, he passed out again. When his partner discovered him a bit later, Ruby was still by his side and stayed with him until paramedics arrived. A spokesperson for the shelter where Ruby lived before being adopted was pleased, but not surprised to hear that Ruby was there to help her new owner through the ordeal. “Ruby was always a firm favorite amongst staff here,” they said. “We are all thrilled to learn that she has helped save a life out in the community.”
