A Baltimore woman saves a family from their burning home. On February 5th, Elizabeth Fabien was driving down the road in the Nottingham neighborhood in northeast Baltimore when she saw a fire on the front porch of a house. "It was dark so I could see what was happening up ahead,” she recalls. “There was a little bit of flickering and as I came around the bend I could see that the front of their house was actually on fire."
Through the window, Fabien could see that a family was still inside the home, unaware of the fire. "So I jumped out,” she says. “I figured out what the address was, and called 911, reported the fire and ran to the back to help get the family out.” At first, Rene Debelius, who owns the house, was surprised by the knocks on their door, but she was grateful for the warning that allowed her family and their pets to escape unharmed.
But Fabien didn’t didn’t stop at just warning the family. She and a neighbor used a hose to help put out some of the flames and when firefighters arrived a few minutes later, they were able to finish the job. Because of Fabien's quick actions, damage to the family’s home was minimal. And now the family is saying they don’t know what they would have done if it wasn’t for her. "We are just so incredibly fortunate that Elizabeth was in the right place at the right time,” Debelius says. “She's the guardian angel that every neighborhood deserves.”
