Baltimore barbers are giving out free haircuts to help give a new start to men in recovery for addiction. Student barbers are offering their services to men receiving treatment to get their lives back on track as part of a program called "New Year, New You."
The program’s director Ericka Alston Buck of Trey Way Multi-Treatment Services is partnering with her brother Corey Alston and his classmates at Baltimore Beauty and Barber School to provide free cuts to men who are overcoming addiction or other trauma. “We’ve all been in situations where we weren’t so fortunate, so to be able to help these guys, give them a shape up so they can go on a job interview,” explains Alston. “It feels good.”
Client Carl Williams says the trim is just what he needs to give him the confidence to start getting his life back on the right track. “Before it’s like I’m a lil rough,” Williams says. “But when I actually do get my haircut, I feel like a new man.” He hopes this is the first step in a long path to a possible career in law.
