An Oregon nine-year-old receives a near perfect score on the math portion of the SAT. Brian Methvin says his son Solomon has been a whiz with numbers his whole life. The now ten-year-old has been able to count to 100 since he was one and was doing elementary school math at three. So it was no surprise to his family when he came close to acing his math SAT last year.

Brian wanted to instill a love of math in his kids and started working with Solomon at a very young age. “He homeschools with his mom too on other subjects, but math has always been our bonding thing since he was an infant,” he says. Currently, they are working on Calculus, a college-level course.

The SATs are usually meant for students heading to college in the next couple of years, but Solomon had taken a few practice tests and wanted to give the real test a shot. So they signed him up for it and when the score came back, he’d gotten 750 out of a possible 800. As a reward for his excellent score, his parents gave him a few bucks so he could buy some Pokémon gear, because he is a ten-year-old afterall. Solomon plans to continue his math studies and hopes to attend MIT when he’s older.
