A hairstylist in Utah offers her services for free to people struggling with mental health issues. In recognition of World Mental Health Day, Brittney Bott wanted to lift the spirits of people in her community who might be battling dark thoughts. Bott, an independent hair stylist in Ogden, Utah, offered the thing she was qualified to offer that she knows can help make anyone feel better about themselves: hair styling.

Bott made a post on a local social media page, offering her services to anyone who needed a boost. “If you’re going through it, and you cannot get the motivation to wash your hair…please reach out,” she writes in the post. “I will wash your hair, put some great detangling products in it, and blow-dry/braid it for you – free of charge.” There were a number of takers on Bott’s offer. She sat them in the salon chair and did her magic and she says there were a lot of tears.

“I’m not a mental health professional; I can’t offer advice," she explains. "But even just being there, listening to them, hearing them really helps people work through things internally." One of Bott’s clients summed it up best when she told her she was glad to know she wasn’t alone. “By offering this for other people, taking care of them when they can’t,” Bott says. “It’s just a really simple way to make them feel human again.”
