FL Teacher Gives Girls Free Dresses For School Dances

A Tampa Bay area teacher is giving girls free gowns to wear to school dances. In 2019, one of Stephanie Brown’s middle school students couldn’t afford a dress for a school dance, so she took the student dress shopping. She realized that if an eight-grade dance is something that some students couldn’t afford, it’s unlikely that they would be able to afford to go to prom or homecoming.

So Brown started Gowns for Girls, a grass-roots organization that collects dresses from the community and gives them away to high schoolers going to their homecoming and prom dances. One mom, Zoe Johnson, says she loves what the organization is doing. “It's a big blessing because I have two teenagers so I have to buy two dresses," Johnson says. "It's nice to be able to split the cost to save money."

Everyone involved in Gowns for Girls seems to get something from the organization, from parents, to students, to the donors and volunteers who make it all possible. And Brown might gets as much from it as the young ladies who get to pick out a special dress for their special night. "It's great. I love it. It just makes my heart explode," Brown says. "It's probably the best feeling in the world, knowing that I've made some girl very happy."
