Stowaway Cat Reunites With Family After Ferry Trip

A cat in Scotland is reunited with her family after hitching a ride on an overnight trip to an island in the North Atlantic. Recently, Doug Craig took a three hour ferry ride from his home in Oban, Scotland, to do some work on the Island of Coll in the Sea of Hebrides. After finishing up his job, the 31-year-old broadband technician noticed some hairs all over his toolbag and was shocked to see a set of glowing eyes staring at him from a dark corner in his work van.

Craig was relieved when he realized that it was just his neighbor’s cat, Tia. "At first I thought a Coll cat had sneaked in but then I got a closer look and recognised her from home,” he says. “I thought 'Oh no, I've cat-napped my neighbors' pet.’” He reached out to his mom so she could let his neighbors, Elyse and Martin Hamilton and their children Stanley and Beatrix, know that Tia was safe with him.

After picking up some food for Tia from the island’s general store, Craig pitched a tent to camp out until the morning when he could catch the ferry back home. He had Tia sleep in the van so she wouldn’t get stranded on the island. The Hamilton’s were pleased that Tia was safe and grateful that Craig took such good care of their cat. It’s not the first time that Tia has hitched a ride in a car without the driver knowing, but the Hamiltons hope she had her fill for now. "We're hoping she's had quite enough adventures for a while,” Elyse says. “Although she seems to have really warmed up to Doug and we could see her trying it again to get spoiled!"
