A good Samaritan in Maryland stops a man from jumping off a bridge. Tanya Washington was carpooling over the Thomas Johnson Bridge in Southern Maryland when she spotted a young man walking on the bridge. Something about him didn’t sit right with Washington, so she turned the car around to see if he needed help.
As she approached the young man, she thought he was getting ready to jump, so she stopped her car in the middle of the bridge, got out and ran toward him. “I asked him not to jump, I told him I can’t swim, and I told him to not jump because I’ll have to try and save him,” she recalls. After introducing herself, she asked the young man his name and when he told her, she kept repeating his name, “so he knew that I knew who he was and that he’s important.”
Eventually, Washington was able to convince the young man to take her arm and she hugged him. Calvert County Police arrived shortly after and took the man to a nearby hospital for treatment. Washington is happy she followed her gut and reached out to the man and says you never know when your actions might save someone, “It can even be a kind gesture or smile that can really make a difference in someone’s life.”
