You Can Pick “Human Composting” As A California Burial Option

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 351 into law on Sunday, which will allow people in the state to use a burial method known as human composting starting in 2027. Supporters say it’s an eco-friendly alternative to traditional methods of handling human remains like cremation or burial.

California is joining Washington, Colorado, Oregon, and Vermont in allowing human composting. The process involves human remains naturally decomposing over a 30-to-45 day period after being placed in a steel vessel and buried in wood chips, alfalfa, and other materials. The soil created by the process can then be returned to families or donated to conservation land.
