A Virginia man who thought he’d won $600 in the lottery was surprised to find out he’d actually won $1-million. While on his way home from work, Jose Flores Velasquez stopped into a Safeway to pick up some soda and also grabbed a “20x the Money” Virginia Lottery scratch-off game. After playing the game, the Annandale man was happy to win what he thought was $600 from the game.
Valasquez headed to the Virginia Lottery customer service center in Woodbridge to collect his winnings, but when lotto staffers checked his ticket, they realized that he’d actually won the game’s top prize of $1-million. The chances of winning the top prize from the “20x the Money” game are roughly one in 1.7-million.
He chose to receive the money as a lump sum instead of payments spread out over the next 30 years and went home with over $750-thousand after taxes. Velasquez plans on using his new-found wealth to help take care of his family and maybe start his own business.
