Man Gives Car To Ukrainian Refugee Family In Exchange For A Pie

A Washington State man gives his car to a Ukrainian family in exchange for a homemade apple pie. When Russia invaded Ukraine earlier this year, Karyna and Artem Poleshchuk were forced to flee their home and life in Kharkiv with their nine-year-old daughter Veronika.

After a long and difficult journey, they finally arrived in Washington State a month ago and are settling down near Seattle in King County. The Poleshchuks are safe and they have friends helping them adjust to life in the U.S., but living in the area they’ve chosen requires owning a car. With a budget of $4-thousand they came across Emmanuel Ferran’s white Mazda 3 he had for sale.

Ferran’s mother told him about how she fled the civil war in El Salvador as a child, so he has some idea of what the Poleshchuks are going through. His mother also told him about the help she had making it in a new country. So when it came time to sign over the car to the Poleshchuks, Ferran wouldn’t take their money. But he didn’t just give away the car. In exchange for the title, he had one request: a pie. Karyna stayed up all night baking a Sharlotka apple cake, a traditional cake recipe that was handed down from her mother. And Ferran thinks he actually made a fair trade, saying, “That was a really good pie."
