A friendly ballgame between Kansas City and Jackson County, Missouri, officials raises thousands for a historic museum. Kansas City has a strong baseball culture and is home to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. But one century old baseball tradition had been forgotten and is now being resurrected to support a good cause.
Kansas City author and historian Pat O’Neill discovered that a rivalry between a city run baseball team and a Jackson County team dates back as far as the 1800s. So, in the interest of fun and to help raise money for the city’s Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, they’re resurrecting the local rivalry. “This is about having some fun, bringing back some old tradition,” says former Kansas City Mayor Sly James.
The city team, led by current Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, and the county team, managed by Kansas City Royals veteran Frank White, went head to head for the first time in modern history. The game helped to raise more than $17-thousand for the museum and officials hope it’s the start of a renewed annual tradition.
