A New York second-grader is being hailed a hero for saving his classmate from choking using the Heimlich maneuver. David Diaz Jr was eating with his classmates at Woodrow Wilson Elementary in Binghamton, New York, when he noticed another kid was choking on a piece of pizza.
The seven-year-old knew about the Heimlich maneuver from watching “The Good Doctor” with his father, so he jumped into action to save his classmate’s life. “If anybody is choking or is in danger, you always have to save them,” David says. “If you don’t, then that could be really sad.”
Recently, David was recognized for his lifesaving action by the school district superintendent Dr. Tonia Thompson and New York State Senator Fred Akshar. The young hero was presented with a New York State Senate Commendation Award for the heroic deed.
