Wimbledon organizers hand out hundreds of free tickets to Ukrainian refugees to welcome them to their new home. Newly arrived refugees and their host families gathered for an afternoon tea in the town of Merton near London a couple of days ago.

They were served the classic Wimbledon dish of strawberries and cream and presented with tickets to the matches where they can see some of the world’s best tennis players compete.

Wimbledon Foundation head Paige Murphy says it’s a proud moment for the organization. “It’s really part of our mission,” she says. “To give people a really special experience.” They hope the day will give their new neighbors a bit of a break and provide some enjoyment after such a traumatic few months.

  • More than 100 families in Merton have taken in over 400 Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion.
