Florida Power and Light (FPL) awards ten south Florida high school graduates with $20-thousand scholarships. This past week, FPL announced this year’s recipients of the NextEra Energy Scholarship for Black Students in SECME, which rewards college-bound minority students on a STEM career path.

Recipients of the scholarship are chosen based on their academic performance, community service, school and community participation, work experience, and an essay and statement of their education and career goals. Unusual personal or family circumstances can also affect the selection process.

Each of the recipients is headed to an accredited college where they’ll be a full-time student and has volunteered for at least one year for The Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering (SECME). And for meeting these requirements and being among the most qualified applicants, they’ll each be getting $5-thousand per year for up to four years to help pay for their schooling.
