First All-Black Climbing Team Makes History Reaching Summit Of Mt Everest

A group of black climbers make history as the first all-black team to reach the top of Mount Everest. Full Circle Everest, the first-ever team of all-black climbers to attempt to summit the highest peak on Earth, have successfully completed their historic mission.

Team leader Phil Henderson, who was among the few members not to reach the summit, announced on The North Face’s Instagram page that on May 12th seven of the 12 members of their team had summited Mt Everest and safely returned to base camp. Henderson says the team “brought representation to the highest place on Earth—and into the global outdoor community.”

The team of mostly-American elite climbers set out on a mission to “inspire the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts, educators, leaders, and mountaineers of color to continue chasing their personal summits.” Of the 10-thousand recorded successful summits of Everest, it was estimated that only 10 black climbers had reached the peak. The Full Circle Everest team has almost doubled that number now.
