A Louisiana mother and daughter are set to graduate together from the same college. Suzzon Jiles, a 48-year-old mother of two, is graduating this week with a degree from Grambling State University at the same time that her 21-year-old daughter, Trinity Humphrey, will also be graduating from the institution.
As a young woman, Jiles put her education on hold to devote herself to raising a family. Then at 29, she returned to school to get her high school diploma. And when her daughter was preparing to go to college, Jiles decided maybe it was time she also furthered her education. On May 12th, Jiles will receive her degree in early childhood education, while Humphrey will get hers in biology.
Jiles says that her college journey has been challenging, especially with COVID and while working two jobs. “It was stressful,” she recalls. “But, I wouldn’t trade another day for it. I would do it again.” When asked if she had any wise words for others, Jiles advises not to wait to pursue your dreams. “Hesitation holds you back,” she says. “But you have to keep stern and keep pressing.”
