TikTok Leads Woman To “Soulmate” Kidney Donor

A California woman finds the person who saves her life with a kidney donation thanks to TikTok. Rubi Duran’s main focus had been going to college, but that all changed when she was diagnosed with stage 5 chronic kidney disease at 23. She started dialysis treatment, which caused discomfort and robbed her of a normal life.

After Rubi’s doctors told her it could take a decade to find a donor who was a match, she decided to share her story on TikTok, posting videos about her journey with kidney disease. Sandra Leon saw the videos and was inspired to reach out to Rubi, offering to become her donor. They share the same blood type and are around the same age and Sandra discovered she was a perfect match.

So she became Rubi’s donor, but Rubi didn’t just get a new kidney, she gained a lifelong friend. The young women are now bonded for life, and it was social media that brought them together. “I don’t know how to explain it,” Rubi says about Sandra. “I know she is my soulmate.”
