A Miami emergency room doctor was in the right place at the right time, being the first to happen upon a man bleeding on the side of the highway. Last weekend, Dr. Miguel Ribe was headed home from a dinner with friends when he came upon a man lying on the side of I-95 covered in blood.
Ribe, an emergency medicine senior resident at Jackson Memorial Hospital, immediately pulled over and ran to provide assistance. “Really your mind kind of goes on autopilot,” recalls Ribe. “You go from an innocent bystander to, ‘Okay this is a patient I’ve got to take care of and I got to make sure that they’re stable.’”
The man had been riding on a bus and lost his balance, tumbling out the doors of the bus and landing on the pavement headfirst. Ribe helped stabilize the man’s breathing and kept him alert until paramedics arrived and transported him to the hospital. The man suffered serious injuries to his head, but was later reported to be in stable condition. Dr. Ribe was just glad he was there to help and hopes to be able to meet the man he helped save.
