“Miracle” Baby Girl Heads Home From Hospital After 848 Days

After spending more than two years in the hospital, a baby in California finally gets to go home. Addy Smith has lived her entire life in Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. Since she was born, she’s been fighting for survival, spending more than two years on a ventilator and undergoing multiple surgeries. But now, after 848 days in the hospital, the baby girl is finally getting to go home to be with her family.

With her parents by her side, Addy has been battling chronic lung disease, but doctors believe she’s now well enough to leave the hospital. "She's the strongest human I know,” says Addy’s dad, Chris Smith.“Giving up was never an option for the three of us. She fought so hard and she's one in a million like the doctors here have said. And tonight after everything we finally get to be under one roof as a family."

Addy weighed only one pound when she was born, but now the two year old weighs in at 20 pounds. And although her battle with lung disease isn’t entirely over, doctors say she will continue to improve as she gets around the clock care from home.

  • The family has a GoFundMe page to raise money to help with Addy’s ongoing medical care.
