An Ohio ice-hockey player goes into cardiac arrest on the ice and is saved by his fellow players. Last week, Bruce Tronolone was playing hockey in Toledo, Ohio, in an amateur over-50 league. As the 63-year-old was headed off the ice, he collapsed. His teammates yelled “call 911” and “go get Schulty,” referring to Jim Schulty, a lieutenant with Toledo Fire and Rescue, who was also playing that night.
Schulty came running out on the ice and took over performing CPR from Tronolone’s teammates while a referee headed to the lobby to get an automated external defibrillator (AED). When the AED arrived, Schulty administered one shock and Tronolone regained his pulse. An ambulance arrived shortly after and transported Tronolone to the emergency room.
After a week in the hospital, Tronolone is back home. He and his family are grateful that his fellow players knew just what to do and he’s encouraging everyone to learn CPR. "You know they prevented my heart from having major damage from being without a pulse for that period of time," he says. And he’s thankful to be alive, adding, “It could have gone the other way."
