Heartwarming video of a school basketball team giving hugs to the mother of their deceased teammate goes viral. In November of 2020, 14-year-old Ely Dehart was killed when the truck he was driving overturned on a gravel road in rural Nebraska. Ely had attended the Sumner-Eddyville-Miller School since the third grade where he was a member of the basketball team and close friends with his teammates. So when Ely’s mom, Jennifer Dehart returned to the school to cheer on her son’s team, the team started a new tradition where each team member comes and gives her a hug.
Dehart posted a video to her TikTok of a touching moment when the team members ran across the court one at a time to hug her. The post received over a million likes and over 4-million views. The video has also been reposted across multiple social media sites by celebs like former NBA player Rex Chapman and actress Patricia Arquette.
Dehart was surprised by the video’s popularity. “It’s insane,” she says. “I never in a million years would have thought that would happen.” She says she only posted the video to show how much she cares for her son’s teammates, who she’s relied on to get her through her loss. “There’s a piece of my heart missing that will forever be missing, but if we didn’t have such a great community and people around me, it wouldn’t be anywhere as easy,” she says. “I’m very thankful for that.”
