Border Patrol Agent Finds Baby Abandoned In The Desert

An Arizona Border Patrol Agent discovers a baby wrapped in camouflage and tucked under a bush in the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. US Customs and Border Protection Agents were patrolling the US/Mexico border in southern Arizona on the evening of February 16th when they apprehended a group of undocumented migrants. While the agents processed the migrants, an agent left the group on an ATV tracking a set of footprints through the desert.

While following the footprints, the agent saw what appeared to be a bundle of camouflage clothes on the ground tucked under a bush. Thinking it might contain drugs being smuggled across the border, he returned to retrieve it. The agent got off the ATV and unwrapped the bundle to find a five-week-old baby quietly looking up at him.

The agent returned to the group where a Guatemalan woman in their custody claimed the child. She said that someone else in their group had agreed to carry the baby for her. The baby was assessed and found to be in good health and uninjured and after an investigation, it was determined that the mother didn’t intentionally place the child in danger. After the mother and the baby were deemed healthy, they were released across the border to Mexico.
