A 10-year-old girl in Russia survived a night outside in a blizzard thanks to a surprising heat source: a stray dog. The girl was walking home from school and got lost about a half a mile from her home in Uglegorsk [[OO-glay-goresk]], and when she didn’t return, a search party started looking for her.
But with the snowstorm dropping up to two feet of snow drifts, visibility was poor, making it tough for volunteers and police to see anything. Eventually, a local gave them a tip that he had seen a girl playing with a stray dog near a shelter. And that’s where this little girl was found, sitting on a mattress outside a shelter snuggled up to a stray dog. She told authorities she was “hugging a fluffy dog for warmth.”
"The fact that the girl remained alive in such weather really is a miracle," said volunteer searcher Anatoly Ivanov. Luckily, she was appropriately dressed for the weather and after being treated at a local hospital for minor frostbite, she was able to go home the same day.
