An Australian golfer managed to make a hole-in-one at a Queensland course just two months before his 100th birthday. Hugh Brown teed up on the fifth hole at the Indooroopilly Golf Club. The group in front of his was still finishing up on the green. Customarily it’s considered good golfing etiquette to wait until the previous golfers have cleared the green before teeing off, but Brown didn’t expect to hit his ball that far. So when he saw the group ahead waving their hands in the air, he thought he’d made them angry by hitting too close to them.
Brown made his way toward the green and asked if they'd seen where his ball ended up and they all pointed to the hole. Brown had made a hole-in-one on the 161-yard par-three hole. It’s the first time he’s gotten a hole-in-one since 1960 and at 99-years-old it’s believed that he’s the oldest Australian to ever achieve the feat.
As is the custom, Brown bought the first round of drinks for his playing partners, who he plays with three times a week and who call themselves the “Old and Bold” group. The round actually cost less than it did when he last hit a hole-in-one 60 years ago. "I think it cost me 15 pounds (equal to around $335 USD today),” he says. “Which was a lot of money in those days."
