Couple Adopt Baby Found In Subway Station

A man in New York City found a baby in a subway station and he adopted him. Danny Stewart was walking through the 14th Street station when he spotted the newborn abandoned in a sweatshirt on the floor. He called police and was later asked to testify in family court about how he found the baby, but the judge surprised him with another question.

She told Danny they wanted to place the baby in pre-adoptive foster care as quickly as possible and asked if he would be interested in adopting him. He says he felt a connection to the baby and said yes to adopting him, adding, “But I don’t think it’s that easy,” and the judge smiled and said, “Well, it can be.” And after holding the baby for the first time, Danny’s partner, Pete Mercurio, was ready to be a dad, too.

The couple named their son Kevin and the three of them have become a happy family since that day in 2000. When Danny and Pete got married in 2011, the same family court judge who brought them together officiated the ceremony. Now Kevin is 20 and studying math and computer science in college and his dads can’t imagine their lives without him. Pete has written a children’s book about their family’s story, “Our Subway Baby.” He explains, “I did not know that this level of deep love existed in the world until my son came into my life.”
