A couple has been saved from their pickup truck that was left dangling off a bridge in what Idaho State Police Troopers describe as a “heroic rescue.” Authorities report the driver of the pickup pulling a 30-foot camp trailer lost control, swerving across the road before knocking out a guard rail and driving off the bridge on Interstate 84 near Twin Falls.
When a trooper arrived, the truck was hanging by a safety chain connected to the trailer and it was about 80 to 100 feet above the bottom of the gorge. The couple inside was held in place by their seatbelts and their two small dogs were inside with them. They weren’t seriously hurt and soon the Magic Valley Paramedics Special Operations Rescue Team arrived to save them.
Rescuers rappelled off the bridge and attached a harness to each person before pulling them and their dogs to safety. The driver and the passenger, both in their 60s, were checked out at the hospital and are doing well, as are their dogs. “This is something we train and prepare for,” explains Captain David Neth of the Idaho State Police, “but when it happens and people’s lives literally hang in the balance, it takes everyone working together, and then some.”
